THE DIFFERENCE
To be frank, I don’t have the overheads that an agency does, so you won’t need to take out a second mortgage to get agency-quality artwork. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
WHAT IS MISS RUBY'S PROCESS?
I start by unpacking your brief/project request (this may include a number of questions that I needed answered in order to determine exactly what you envision)
Then I move onto creating a project plan outlining how the project will unfold over the project timeline, and I will also give you a cost estimate.
Once cost estimate and project timeline have been accepted and deposit has been paid I will start on your project as per agreed timeline.
Next step, research.
Once efficient research has taken place I will start the brainstorming, sometimes these two phases merge.
Then for the magic, I start the initial concept design for your consideration, and build on these concepts throughout the process.
The work will then be presented and the refining stage will begin.
Once design work has been signed off, the prep for production will take place, before final artwork is sent through I will need to receive the outstanding balance and then Viola, the artwork is yours.
*please read terms and conditions for more info
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO FINISH A PROJECT?
Project deadlines may vary depending on the size and scope of the project at hand. Each project is unique and needs to be treated as such.
Being a freelancers means that sometimes my time can be stretched over a variety of projects, I prefer to dedicate my time and focus to each and every project with care, which means turnaround times can vary.
I encourage my clients to give the project as much time as possible, sometimes last minute deadlines can lead to rushed artwork and in turn may not offer the same impact as a well thought out project would.
I HAVE AN URGENT JOB CAN YOU HELP?
If I had a rand for every time I heard this I would be on a remote beach sipping a margarita.
It’s the nature of the business, and I’m no stranger to being asked to pull off some magic – but depending on my project timeline this may mean adjusting someone else’s artwork time to suit your deadline. Unfortunately I do charge a ‘rush fee’ (25% of design cost) So please bear this in mind when sending through your job request.
HOW MANY CHANGES AM I ALLOWED TO MAKE TO THE ARTWORK?
3 is the magic number you are looking for here.
Once we pass the 3 revert mark, it will be hourly rates from there on out depending on the depth of your change requests.
I have pretty competitive rates so keeping my revert count down means keeping my costings down. It’s a win-win.
ARE THERE ANY HIDDEN FEES?
I prefer to work with transparency, and although I do my utmost to quote as close to possible on the amount of time I estimate a project to take, anything is possible. Sometimes more time is required on a project from the clients perspective, if there are an unreasonable amount of changes or reworks required additional costs may occur. However, I will never surprise you with added on fees to your invoice without making you completely aware of the additional costs and I will give you the heads up before the costs are incurred. This is why it is so important to really focus on the revert stage and make sure your feedback is concise.

CAN YOU DO THE PRINTING/PRODUCTION OF MY PROJECT?
Yes of course I can, I work with a number of suppliers that I have built up trustworthy relationships with over the past few years. There will however be a mark-up on production costs to cover the project management fee.
WHY DOES THE COLOUR CHANGE FROM SCREEN TO SCREEN OR PRINTED VS SCREEN?
Monitor Display colour change:
Simply put, each monitor is different and the output of colour may vary depending on the quality of the monitor in question. It is impossible to make a colour appear the same on each monitor. however it is important to develop colour guidelines for your brand in order to remain as consistent as possible.
Screen vs Printing colour change?
“Printers don’t print colours the way they look on a monitor. The picture may look great on the monitor but doesn’t print true to the screen. These colours will never be a perfect match because the image on the screen and the image from the printer use two different colour sources. The screen pixels are emitted light and a printer can’t print light. It uses dyes and pigments to replicate the colours.” – Read more here
This being said having a sound set of guidelines and colour codes for your brand will minimise the difference you see on screen vs what is being printed.
CAN YOU PLEASE SUPPLY ME WITH THE OPEN ARTWORK?
For the same reasons you wouldn’t go to a restaurant, order a meal and expect the recipe for free, I too do not give away open files of artwork without a fee.
*This does not apply to logos, email signatures, letterheads or PowerPoint presentation templates.
CAN YOU MAKE THE ARTWORK SO THAT I CAN EDIT IT?
If you work in creative cloud, sure no problem (the open artwork fee will apply here)
If you work in office programmes I cannot guarantee you a very high standard of design, these programmes are very limiting in terms of their capabilities when it comes to design principles.
If you have artwork designed and then only request for it to be editable once completed an entirely new costing will come in to play as the entire project will need to be redone into a programme that will work for you.
TERMINOLOGY
BRIEF
A design brief is a document for a design project developed by a person or team (the designer or design team) in consultation with the client. They outline the deliverables and scope of the project including any products or works (function and aesthetics), timing and budget.
SPOT COLOUR
In offset printing, a spot colour or solid colour is any colour generated by an ink (pure or mixed) that is printed using a single run, whereas a process colour is produced by printing a series of dots of different colours.
PANTONE
Pantone colours are colour codes that stand for a specific shade. … The formula developed by pantone is a spot colour. This means that the colour is created from a palette of 18 basic colours, not with screens or dots. Process colours are CMYK colours, the colour is determined by cyan, magenta, yellow and black.
DIELINE
A dieline is used in graphic design as a placeholder for assisting in the proper layout of a document that will be die cut as part of the finishing process. It is usually placed into the graphic’s computer file as a separate layer for sizing and orientation purposes.
CMYK/PROCESS COLOURS
CMYK refers to the primary colours of pigment: Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black. These are the inks used on the press in “4-color process printing”, commonly referred to as “full colour printing” or “four colour printing”. The combination of RGB light creates white, while the combination of CMYK inks creates black.
TYPOGRAPHY
Typography is the art and technique of arranging type to make written language legible, readable, and appealing when displayed. The arrangement of type involves selecting typefaces, point sizes, line lengths, line-spacing, and letter-spacing, and adjusting the space between pairs of letters.
BLEED
Bleed is a printing term that is used to describe a document which has images or elements that touch the edge of the page, extending beyond the trim edge and leaving no white margin. When a document has bleed, it must be printed on a larger sheet of paper and then trimmed down.
LOGOMARK
A logomark is all about communicating the essence of a brand through a graphic symbol. While this can be accompanied with the company name, the most powerful, memorable logomarks can stand alone as a visual shorthand for the brands they represent.
CROP MARKS
Crop marks, also known as trim marks, are lines printed in the corners of your publication’s sheet or sheets of paper to show the printer where to trim the paper. They are used by commercial printers for creating bleeds where an image or colour on the page needs to extend all the way to the edge of the paper.
LOGOTYPE
The polar opposite of a logomark, in which the company name is placed front and centre, with no accompanying symbol.
